Week 1 Blog 2 Youth Experiences of Incarceration in the U.S.

After watching the videos Stuart Brown Says Play is More Than Fun and the clip from an Arizona Juvenile Correction Facility the three points that stood out to me most were the connection between brain development and play, the importance of play not only to the human species but to all living species, and the lasting effects play deprivation can have on a child (Brown).  The clip from the Arizona juvenile correction facility clearly shows a group of juveniles that were never allowed to be a child and take part in play.  As stated by Brown animals that were deprived of play did not develop a brain that was normal.  This should be a clear indication that children that are deprived of play will most likely face the same situation.
The point that really squared with me was in the clip from the Arizona juvenile correction facility where they stated that they treat the juveniles in their facility as children as that is exactly what they are. I believe treating them as an adult and running the facility as a prison will not help in their rehabilitation and prevent them from becoming a repeat offender.  Many of these children clearly missed out on learning some of the vital roles needed to be a productive member of society and I believe it all starts with play.
The one thing I want to point out is that 43% of the kids in juvie will end up going back to a juvenile facility or an adult prison according to the clip from the Arizona juvenile correction facility.  I believe more people should become aware of this as a 43% return rate is outrageous.  As more people become aware of the importance of play and the vital role this plays in a child’s life we might be able to make better strides at allowing our kids to be kids and lower the juvenile incarceration rate.
